MANILA, Philippines (Xinhua) - Twenty three people were killed while ten others were injured in an ambush staged by insurgents in Carmen town in Surigao del Sur, southern Philippines, Philippine military officials said Thursday.

The attack occurred between Kilometers 61 and 62 in Tago town at about 8 a.m., according to Col. Hilario Atendido, spokesman of the Armed Forces’ Southern Command.

Atendido identified the wounded militiamen as Lito Cabugas, Gaudencio Layno, Marcelino Rivas and Nilo Lamila.
