[Title] => Hike in SSS premiums not yet final
[Summary] => Faced with an uproar from different sectors, Malacañang said yesterday the plan to increase SSS premiums is still being studied.

"That has not been decided with finality," said Presidential Spokesman Renato Corona, adding that the SSS Board headed by Administrator Vitaliano Nañagas is still studying the matter.

The other day, President Arroyo told Palace reporters about the plan to hike SSS premiums gradually. This, she added though, will be accompanied by an increase in SSS benefits.

Presidential Spokesman Renato Corona said the shortened work day will give workers more time to be with their families and provide greater convenience to those traveling to the provinces.

"We have no authority over private firms so we can only suspend work in government offices. The half-day suspension will give our government workers a longer Holy Week," he said.

Malacañang said yesterday that a recent survey that showed the Philippines as the fifth most corrupt among 12 Asian nations must have been referring to the previous administration.

Presidential Spokesman Renato Corona said the results of the survey by the Singapore-based Political and Economic Risk Consultancy (PERC) likely pertained to the deposed Estrada administration since the Arroyo administration is only two months old.

The loss of immunity from criminal charges of an ex-president is a matter of law and not a question that should be settled on a survey of public sentiment. The matter is now in the hands of the Ombudsman. It is the Ombudsman who will decide the proper legal steps to take on this question.
