[Summary] => The Department of Energy (DOE) will push for legislation allowing the use of ethanol as an alternative blending product for gasoline, Energy Secretary Vincent S. Perez said.
Perez said during the launching of the Philippine Energy Plan (PEP) 2005 Update, that the DOE will support Senate Bill No. 1677 and House Bill No. 2583 calling for the establishment of a National Fuel Ethanol Program.
Ethanol or ethyl alcohol is produced by fermenting and distilling crops such as sugar cane, cassava, corn, and other agricultural feedstock.

Archimedes Amarra, executive director of the Sugar Masterplan Foundation Inc., said several players in the sugar industry are seriously studying options on how to bankroll the construction of the plant, possibly within three years.
The proposed ethanol plant would initially produce 20,000 to 50,000 liters per day.
