[Title] => ASEAN Anxieties
[Summary] =>
Okay, so the ASEAN Summit is bubbling right up and it's impossible not to notice. The newly asphalted roads, the freshly painted electric posts and the - dare I mention it? - upcoming four-day school break are but teasers for the grand hosting gig that Cebu City is slated to pull off. Both the government and the private sectors are eagerly gearing up for the event, disbursing billions of pesos in total for beautification and preparation purposes. Like an extravagant hostess doting lavishly on guests, Cebu as a whole seems to have spared no expense.

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) delivered its biggest interest rate hike in more than three years yesterday, as worsening inflation pressures prompted a more aggressive monetary policy response. At its fifth policy meeting this year, the Monetary Board raised its benchmark rate by 50 basis points to 5.50 percent. The larger-than-expected increase marked the BSP’s fourth consecutive rate hike this year and its first 50-basis-point adjustment since February 2023.

New York-based GlobalSource Partners is advocating a larger 50-basis-point interest rate hike by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) today, warning that a smaller adjustment may not be enough to contain worsening inflation and prevent further damage to household spending and economic growth.
