It’s been 10 Valentine’s Days since Marco Pantani passed away. Officially, the cause of death was acute cocaine poisoning, but if  I  have my say, he died not in 2004 but in 1999.

I have always looked two Lance Armstrong two ways- one, asone of the greatest a cycling champion and as an inspiration when my Mom was battling breast cancer. While these attributes can easily merge, the line between the two is very clear for me.

When Carlos Sastre moved from ONCE to CSC in 2002, I always believed that CSC director sportif Bjarne Riis signed him to work for his more prestigious teammates. He had to work for the now “disgraced” Tyler Hamilton....

Except for Ricardo Ricco and a few other riders who tried to win stage 9, the peloton’s tactic today was tepid at best. Ricco, nicknamed the “Cobra from Formigeni”, attacked 30k from the finish and was never seen again.

The last cyclist to do so was Eddy Merckx, who also incredibly won the sprint and mountain jerseys that year.

But was 2 seconds short on stage 1 to don the yellow jersey. After getting it after stage 4, I thought it was his jersey to lose. How wrong I was! Now, it's Jens Voights jersey, although temporarily. This amiable and hardworking German deserves this jersey, even for a couple of days but he knows he's not a contender for the overall.
