Here’s my bottom line in the controversy over two ineligible senior basketball players of De La Salle: We do not yet know the full story behind the scam, and we missed a golden opportunity to blow a scandal wide open.

"There are people they haven’t talked to, that’s one of the reasons they asked for an extension," said a source close to the UAAP board chaired by Fr. Max Rendon of Adamson.

Garcillano was, as everyone now knows, fresh from his lengthy sojourn in the jungles of Mindanao. Assuming that was really what kept him busy, and inaccessible, he certainly looked none the worse despite trekking for months through virgin forests and Ho Chi Minh-like trails.

No specifics regarding La Salle’s case was listed in the agenda of the monthly board meeting but sources said everything will be tackled as the board tries to come up with a speedy resolution to the case and put an end to the sordid mess that has rocked the school and the league for weeks.

University officials have given assurances that the investigations are incomplete and that the university is looking into its entire athletic program with a view to overhauling existing systems and practices. In fact, it intends to take a one-year leave from the UAAP while the school administration is doing that.

A senior board member of the UAAP yesterday said La Salle has no more business holding on to the 2004 championship trophy after admitting that it had fielded two ineligible players that year.

"I think it’s automatic. The fact that they didn’t contest the eligibility or ineligibility of those players is already an admission of guilt. La Salle has to return the trophy to the board," said the official.

"When someone said last week that ‘heads will roll,’ it was indeed bound to happen," said the source, adding that news of the revamp had started to circulate within the school community.

"If a player or a coach or a team member will be caught trash-talking and taunting, he would be warned. Another infraction, he’ll be slapped a technical foul," Palou told The STAR.
