Handling the white pieces, the second seed Antonio defeated 14th seed NM Ronald Llavanes in marathon 71 moves of a Pirc Defense to notch 8.0 points out of the possible nine and bag the top purse of P50, 000 plus trophy and the title of 2003 La Union Open chess king.

                    [Summary] => SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union — Grandmaster Joey Antonio played a quiet draw with National Master Richard Bitoon yesterday in the penultimate round to maintain the solo leadership of the second La Union Open chess championships in San Fernando, La Union.


The draw, which came after 15 moves of a Pelikan variation of the Sicilian defense, increased Antonio’s output to seven points.


A half point behind him is fellow GM Eugene Torre who was held to a draw by two-time junior champion NM John Paul Gomez in 32 moves of a Slav defense.
