                    [Title] => For teachers
                    [Summary] => There was a time in my childhood when I wanted to be a teacher. Writing on the blackboard for a living seemed attractive, though I am sure there was something more to it that I could not articulate at the time. There were very few teachers who made an impact on me: one in kindergarten, two in grade school, and another two in high school, and maybe double that in college. But I honestly don’t remember all their names.

What is it about truth that is so difficult to face? Every crisis, illness included, is a profound invitation to face the truth: about oneself, our choices, our sexuality, our relationships, every little detail about the life we’ve made. I was recently asked what I meant about living an authentic life: it’s peeling the layers of untruth – as far as we can – until we get to who we really are, stripped of all external and worldly trappings. It is a lifelong process, a process developed over lifetimes.

Objective compassion.

This phrase was brought up several times during the Kolisko Conference last April. It was spoken of in the context of helping others to heal. Everyone I know seems to be in pain lately, so the words have been churning in my mind.

[Summary] => When I gave birth to my firstborn almost nine years ago, my life changed, not just because I became a mother, but because everything I had wanted and expected went the other way. I wanted a natural, peaceful, anesthesia-free birth, but I had labored "too long," so the doctors induced it further. From there everything went downhill. After hours of suffering through unpredictable contractions, doctors convinced me I wouldn’t be able to last if I went without an epidural and my baby would probably go into distress. Being a first- time mom, I went with everything they said. It is their first morning as lovers. Kate walks out of the bedroom to find Leopold busy in the kitchen, brimming with happiness and gratitude over his newfound love. He invites her to sit at the table, pulls out a chair, guides her by the shoulders then, unable to contain himself, plants a kiss on her cheek and serves her breakfast. By this time, she is so overwhelmed by the attention and kindness that she practically bawls into her toast.

Once in a while, I sift through the stack and note my glaring absence in them. The few photos of me aren’t so hot either. Unless I pose, which I do not particularly enjoy, I am simply not photogenic. I am the one whose eyes are always red (from the flash) or white (from being rolled up into my head). I am the one who’s always laughing her brains out or stuffing her face with huge chunks of food; whose cheek always grazes the edge of a wide-angle shot. That’s me.
