The Philippines is set to cash in on medical tourism, a booming multibillion-dollar global industry that is beginning to make waves in the country’s health care sector, Malacañang said yesterday.


Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye said medical tourism may be just the solution to the "brain drain" arising from the exodus of Filipino doctors and other health professionals to foreign countries.

Malacañang confirmed yesterday reports that National Transmission Corp. (Transco) president Dr. Alan Ortiz is on the way out.


Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita, however, could not say exactly why Ortiz would be removed and who would replace him: "If I’m not mistaken there is really a plan to do that (remove Ortiz). I think there is such an action on that but I don’t know if that (document) has been transmitted to (President Arroyo) but there really is such a move."

Mila Talinio of the DepEd’s planning and programming division said the classroom shortage of 6,832 that Acting Education Secretary Fe Hidalgo had mentioned earlier applied to a 1:100 classroom-to-student ratio under a "double-shifting" scheme implemented in all areas.
