[Title] => All sectors of society should honor Labor Day
[Summary] => We were disheartened when we read that the Armed Forces had directed all units to be vigilant this coming Labor Day because some anti-government forces may use the occasion to rally against the President. Traditionally, we have celebrated Labor Day on May 1st and this was because the first of May is the feast day of St. Joseph, the Worker. By sheer coincidence, May 5th is the feast day of San Isidro Labrador, patron saint of farmers. So we honored both labor and farmers on the same month.

[Title] => May and Labor Day
[Summary] => In our youth, we associated the month of May with three things – Santa Cruz de Mayo, Flores de Mayo and the annual visit to Antipolo. Now we are more conscious that the first of May is Labor Day. Most people are under the impression that we started celebrating Labor Day after the coming of the Americans. The truth is that May has been the month when we have traditionally honored our farmers and workers. May 1st is the Feast of St. Joseph the worker while May 15, the feast of San Isidro Labrador, patron saint of farmers.

Now May annually starts as the Labor Day holiday. The truth is that even during the Spanish times May 1 was a day devoted to workers because May 1st is the Feast of St. Joseph the Worker.

A mass demonstration led by the Union Obrera Domocratica took place right in front of Malacañang with the activists shouting "Death to Imperialism!" On the 1st of May, 1913, the First National Labor met in Manila to commemorate the first labor demonstration under the American regime.
