Veteran jockey Jonathan Hernandez and horse Real Spicy will be the recipients of the highest awards in horseracing to be handed out by the sportswriting fraternity during the SMC-PSA Annual Awards on Jan. 18 at the Mall of Asia.


The 29-year-old Hernandez, JB’ to friends and to the Bayang Karerista, won the jockey of the year award for the second straight year, beating fellow Class A rider Patti Dilema in one of the closest races ever for the much-coveted honor.

                    [Summary] => Real Spicy fashioned out an easy victory in a race he was heavily favored to win, ruling the Manila Jockey Club’s classic Gran Copa de Manila Division I race yesterday at the San Lazaro Leisure Park (SLLP) in Carmona, Cavite.


So dominating was Real Spicy’s victory that jockey JB Guce hardly used the whip in steering the four-year-old horse from dead last to a five-length victory over Ever Mine Now. He clocked 1:48 over 1,750 meters.
