Punongbayan, along with the Phivolcs team of Dr. Jessie Daligdig, Dr. Norman Tungol, Dindo Javier and Orlando Abengoza and four Philippine Air Force personnel, was killed in a helicopter crash in Gabaldon, Nueva Ecija last April 28.

Sinabi ni NBI director Reynaldo Wycoco, kinumpirma ng kanilang mga forensic experts sa isinagawang DNA test sa mga piraso ng katawan na nakuha sa crash site sa barangay Ligaya, Gabaldon, Nueva Ecija na isa sa mga ito ay si Director Punongbayan.


Bukod kay Punongbayan, nakilala na rin ang siyam pang kasamahan nito na nasawi rin sa bumagsak na helicopter at positibong nakita rin ang mga labi nito.
