CANDON CITY, Ilocos Sur – With barely three months left before the May 14 election, President Arroyo has still no gubernatorial candidate to replace Gov. Luis "Chavit" Singson, who will run for senator under the administration party.

Political observers claim that although there are seven potential political figures who maybe fielded by the administration to run for governor, so far no one among them was endorsed to replace Singson, the acknowledged political kingpin in the North.

The governors’ endorsement came a few days after the 31-strong Northern Luzon Alliance headed by Speaker Jose de Venecia had also endorsed Singson’s candidacy.

The alliance, composed of congressmen from the North, believes that Singson could easily win in the Senate race due to his popularity, integrity and courage in exposing illegal activities.

Seaweed culture, according to the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), is the most promising alternative livelihood means for these farmers.

Nestor Domenden, BFAR’s Region 1 (Ilocos) director, said his agency is more than willing to extend assistance to the displaced farmers, particularly those planting tobacco in salty areas, on seaweed planting.
