[Title] => Board retains Lipa, denies Ateneo plea
[Summary] => The UAAP board yesterday did not accept the courtesy resignation offered by commissioner Joe Lipa and at the same time turned down Ateneo’s appeal for a replay of its fight-marred Final Four contest with arch-rival La Salle last Thursday at the Araneta Coliseum.

Lipa offered to quit to give the board a free hand in handling the issue and probably save himself from accusations that his being a former Ateneo coach and present commissioner might have some influence on the matter. Lipa was the Blue Eagles coach for three years until the end of the 2001 season.

This is the kind of officiating everybody should expect when ateneo and la salle, two collegiate teams locked up in a rivalry like no other, square off anew on tuesday for the right to face far eastern university in the best-of-three finals of the 66th uaap season.

No less than commissioner Joe Lipa made the assurance last Friday after the UAAP board lowered the boom on three players and a couple of team officials who figured prominently in a nasty bench-clearing incident between the two teams last Thursday at the Big Dome.
