Now it can be told.

As President Estrada's official mouthpiece, it was Fernando "Jerry" Barican's job to inform the public about the affairs of the President and other goings-on in the government as well as to parry verbal attacks on the administration.

Barican swears he never lied to the media and the public - on important issues, at least. Occasionally, however, he made white lies. That, he says, is the truth.

He knew it was time to say goodbye when "homicide or suicide" seemed like great stress relievers.

In his final press briefing yesterday, former Presidential Spokesman Fernando Barican jokingly told reporters that "homicide or suicide" were his only choices whenever he felt stressed during his stint at Malacanang.

"And I thought homicide was always the better choice," he laughed.

He said his experience at Malacanang would serve him in good stead when he decides to return to the private sector "to do some lawyering and a little writing."

Foreign Secretary Domingo Siazon denied yesterday that he ever said outgoing Presidential Spokesman Fernando Barican was unfit to become an ambassador.

Siazon explained that the possibility of Barican heading either of two plum diplomatic posts - the United Nations in New York or as Washington envoy - was not included in the discussions on the spokesman's new assignment.

In diplomacy, he said, it was improper to talk about replacements when the posts were still occupied. This was President Estrada's reaction yesterday to his tumbling popularity amid mounting criticisms of his governance.

Pulse Asia Inc.'s March 15-29 poll showed that 49 percent of 1,200 respondents surveyed were satisfied with Mr. Estrada's job performance while 28 percent were not, for a net approval rating of 21 percent.
