The Supreme Court's Second Division, presided by Associate Justice Reynato Puno, ruled that Teresita Buenaventura's "guilt beyond reasonable doubt was not duly established."
This ruling reversed the decision of the Court of Appeals affirming a Cebu court's conviction of Buenaventura for homicide in the killing of her neighbor Benedicta Garcia, 14 years ago.

In a 16-page decision penned by Associate Justice Reynato Puno, the High Tribunal affirmed a ruling of the Court of Appeals in a labor dispute between Star Paper Corp. and three former employees.
The Supreme Court held that Star Paper’s policy of banning spouses from working in the same company was "violative of the constitutional rights towards marriage and the family of employees" as well as the Labor Code.

The SC recognized that the management has the right to formulate reasonable rules to regulate the conduct of its employees for the protection of its interests.
"These reasonable house rules are considered by the Court as lawful orders and therefore violations thereof will justify dismissal under Article 282 (a) of the Labor Code," Justice Renato Corona said in a January 27 decision.
