Nowadays she can’t recall exactly why she did it, but when Vivienne Tan was a seven-year-old girl, she climbed up the steep ladder of a water tank that towered above the ground. There is a vague recollection of a frantic effort on the part of the adults to get her down safely from her high perch, but what remains vivid in her memory is the view from the top.
