Malacañang announced yesterday the appointment of Charge d’Affaires Willy Gaa as the new ambassador to Washington, a move that should be welcomed by career officials of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).


It has been seven years since a non-political appointee held the plum post. 


Gaa, who has been performing the duties of the ambassador to Washington in an acting capacity since last month, will succeed Ambassador Alberto del Rosario, who resigned last July 8 to return to the private sector.

                    [Summary] => WASHINGTON — US Ambassador Francis Ricci-ardone believes the recent elections in the Philippines were a good exercise in democracy.


Ricciardone spoke Monday with The STAR at a reception hosted by the Philippine Embassy here to celebrate Independence Day.


The reception was held in advance of June 12 because of scheduling conflicts at the venue, the J.W. Marriott Hotel, a stone’s throw from the White House.


"I am confident the Filipino people will see it to be a free and fair elections," Ricciardone said.
