August 28 is the feast-day of a giant of the intellectual and spiritual life of the world, St. Augustine, Bishop and Doctor of the Church. His early life was not edifying. Born in northern Africa to a pagan father and a devout Christian mother (St. Monica) he was brought up a Christian but (in accordance with the custom then prevailing) he was not baptized as a child. The Bible (which he read in Latin) repelled him because its language was not as elegant as that of the pagan classics, and also because the patriarchs and heroes of the Old Testament were often immoral.
