Strawberry-flavored coffee?

- Lydia Castillo - The Philippine Star

We are a coffee drinker and in our previous corporate days, we would be good for at least six cups a day  brewed, not instant.

Not quite our cup of coffee. However, those who want a more refreshing beverage may welcome this new variant offered by Nescafé. It’s called Berry Mocha and is the latest coffee ready-to-drink variant now available in the market.

We are a coffee drinker and in our previous corporate days, we would be good for at least six cups a day – brewed, not instant.

However, we have of late decided to reduce our caffeine overload, and in fact have discovered the pleasure of drinking ready-to-drink concoctions, of which there are many brands. They are good actually, and one former colleague who was into the strong drink as much as we were has now also been recruited to the pre-mixed blends. Of the selection from which to choose, both of us agree that the Kopiko 78-degree café latte is the best – and the lowest priced as well.

We cannot resist trying new food products, especially baked goodies, since we are not adept at baking. Walking into Robinsons Supermarket in Nuvali one morning, we caught sight of a display of various cakes under the label Eurobake, from Dubai, UAE. Immediately we took three of them – the red velvet swiss roll, the marble pound cake and the chocolate pound cake. We are pleased with these.

Moving on, we noted the store’s extensive supply of cheese, among them is our favorite camembert. They also carry brie, both of which are produced in Denmark. The cheese and all three cakes cost us less than P800.

The cost of frozen whole chicken has gone up to P130 a kilo. Portions are sold in the Chicken Station. In the meat section, sirloin is tagged at P504 a kilo. We found the tiny fish dulong, almost like anchovies, among the seafood at P130 a kilo. This easily spoils so upon reaching home we made it into torta, a provincial favorite of ours. Prices of other seafood have also soared – squid at P480 for the big ones and P328 for the small, while large sugpo (prawns) sell at P985 a kilo.  Salmon and tanguingue steaks carry high tags, as well, the former at P748 and the latter at P576.

It was a morning well spent in Robinsons where the staff are friendly and helpful.

A friend brought us to Su Casa Mexico in the new La Huerta Village Mall in Multinational Village in Parañaque. Immediately I became a fan of tacos, quesadillas and other Mexican pastry-based offerings. The place is small but cozy and is owned and managed by a husband and wife team. Richard and his wife are balikbayans from Chicago where they lived beside a Mexican restaurant, from where they got the inspiration to put up this restaurant. We did not realize until then that tacos, quesadillas, enchiladas and buritos can actually be taken as full meals, because each contains flavorful and substantial fillings that include meat, chicken, vegetables and even guacamole (avocado). We particularly like the enchilada. They come with typical dips and sauces but these could be spicy. Check out Su Casa Mexico and taste a bit of the exotic. Call 805-0373.

Have a joyful Sunday!
