Puyat wins Jakarta ASEAN jungolf

The Philippines’ Marcel Puyat ruled the ASEAN junior golf championship for boys 11-12 years old at the Jack Nicklaus signature course Damai Indah Golf & Country Club, at Bumi Serpong, Indonesia last week.

Puyat sank a 25-foot putt for birdie in the par 5 18th hole to win by one stroke over Nicolas Smits of Indonesia. He scored a 79, 77 and 74 (39/35) from the 6,400 yards men’s white tees to lead his division over junior golfers from Taiwan, Korea, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Australia, India and Malaysia.

Puyat, 12, the defending champion, has now won the Jakarta Asean Plus Junior golf championship for two consecutive years.

A grade 6 Ateneo de Manila student, Puyat led a Philippine delegation to the event. The other members were Paulina Sotto, Debbie De Villa, Linnel De Villa, Mia Piccio, Aaron Dimabuyo, Moshe Baldo, Gabe Villareal, and Chris dela Cruz.

The RP girls team composed of L. De Villa and Sotto bagged second place behind the Thai girls. Trophy winners in the girls Class B individual division were Debbie De Villa second runnerup and Piccio fourth runner-up. L. De Villa came in third in the girls Class A division.

Puyat will join a Philippine delegation of jungolfers in the Callaway Junior World Golf Championships in San Diego next month.
