“I have no doubt naman about the quality of Filipino films. I mean, hands down, we can compete globally. But we also have to consider the economic factor of the fighting. So baka may opportunity this season to lower the prices,” komento ni DG Villaluna na bago tinanggap ang nasabing posisyon ay aktibong movie director.

“And then let’s see how it works. We have to also be realistic and understand na nag-i-evolve ang cinema. Hindi na ganoon kalakas ‘yan. Globally, the theater industry, because of streaming, because of YouTube, because of personalized gadgets. And here’s the thing. Kami, pinag-uusapan namin lagi ng FDCP (Film Development Council of the Philippines) and then other cultural sectors. We have to strengthen our theatrical industry.

“We have to because we are confident na mabubuhay ang theatrical industry. Babalik ang tao, you just have to put policies and laws in place. At the same time, we have to embrace the evolution, the new technology. So they can coexist. It’s not either/or. But to answer the question offhand, personally, ah, may oportunidad na babaan ‘yung mga presyo at i-market pa ‘yung films properly kasi naghihingalo na rin ‘yung mga producers natin eh. This year, we’ve been producing so many films. In the past two months, I’ve seen like eight Filipino films.

“So almost every week na Tagalog film naman natin. And a good barometer will be this year’s Metro Manila Film Festival,” paliwanag pa ni Director General Villaluna.

Samantala, nag-decide rin ang FAP na ipahinga this year ang Luna Awards.

Aayusin muna nila lahat ng bagay-bagay para ibalik ang ningning ng nasabing award-giving arm ng FAP.

“So there’s going to be a stopgap this year. We want to change through the awards. We want to bring back the prestige.

“We want to model our academy after foreign institutions. But that includes really changing the whole system. Creating an electoral system and involving a third party so each and every academy member actually gets to vote,” paliwanag pa niya na miyembro ng queer community.

“Part of the plans next year... We actually have a website already, and each academy member will have their own phone where they can watch the films there and actually vote there. So ganun na tayo ka-high-tech and professional.”

“The Academy is tasked to professionalize the Philippines’ film and audio-visual industry workforce, recognize excellence, and provide sustained support through education, training, and industry assistance,” pagdidiin ni Director-General Villaluna. “It is an institution for workers, guilds, and independent practitioners.

“Many of us on the team have worked in the industry and are part of the community,” dagdag niya.

“Our job is to make sure that the people who create Philippine cinema, who make the industry work, have the protection, recognition, and support they need to build viable, long working lives in this field.”

At nakabase sila sa three core mandates:

Professionalization and worker rights; excellence recognition and international award support; and upskilling workshops, training, and industry support.

“Okay, incentives for global winners. You know how it is kapag Olympic winner ka, ‘pag ASEAN winner ka, the government gives you something. You’re incentivized. Sa 128 years na ang Philippine cinema, and we’ve been producing so many good films. We’ve been winning in Cannes, Berlin, Venice, and all these film festivals. It’s high time we actually incentivize our cultural heroes. So starting next year, with the criteria system, incentivize na ang ating global winners,” paniniguro pa niya.

At since the announcement of Magellan as the Philippines’ entry to the Best International Feature category, director Lav Diaz and lead actor Gael Garcia Bernal have been actively campaigning for Academy votes in the US, Asia, and Europe na suportado ng FAP.

“In a Nov. 6 article in Variety, Magellan was placed among the Top 15 contenders for Best International Feature Film, and the Oscar prediction site Gold Derby currently ranks it 12th. On Dec. 5, The New Yorker’s Justin Chang listed Magellan among his honorable mentions for the year’s best films. On Dec. 9, The Film Stage further highlighted Magellan in its feature on ‘The Best Cinematography of 2025,’” impormasyon ni DG Villaluna pinupuri rin ang trabaho ng cinematographer na si Artur Tort.

Pero bukod sa Magellan, suportado rin ng nasabing ahensiya ang iba pang lalaban sa Best Live Action Short Film (Vox Humana); Best Documentary (Food Delivery) for the Golden Globe Awards’ Best Song category, at ang Alitaptap (from Song of the Fireflies) ni Morissette.

“This year will be the first in our steady journey towards acclaim for Filipino film at the Oscars and other big-ticket industry awards,” sabi pa ni Director-General Villaluna. “We have many beautiful, internationally acclaimed films made by Filipinos that have been overlooked by the Oscars, and by offering substantial government support to the makers, we can enhance their means to do intensive campaigning to reach more Academy voters, which is a necessity for getting the elusive Oscar nod.”

Maraming aabangan sa pagpasok ng 2026 sa FAP, kabilang ang pagpapalakas ng proteksyon sa industry workers at kung paano mas maging mataas ang kalidad ng mga pelikulang Pilipino.
