Ang sikat nga composer nga si Jude Gitamondoc nipadayag nga dili lisod ang paggama og kanta ug makat-onan ra kini kung makahibalo ka maminaw og daghang kanta.

“Paminaw og daghang kanta. See what makes them work. Don’t be afraid to get technical. Know the theories, learn the tricks. Undergo basic ear training. Pinaka-importante, read books,” suma pa ni Jude.

Si Jude maoy usa sa nag-compose sa sikat kaayo nga awit nga Hahahasula uban ni Rowel Ucat o Medyo Maldito nga gihatagan og kinabuhi ni Kurt Fick kauban si Paola Sandiego.

Bisan pa man sa kangilngig na niya nga composer, duna gyu’y panahon nga maglisod siya og pangita og ideya sa mahimong unod sa kanta busa kinahanglan nga himuong inspirasyon bisan unsa ka gamay sa usa ka  butang.

 “Naay adlaw nga paspas ko makasuwat, naa say panahon nga pangitaonon kaayo ang mga ideas. I think the best advice I can give is, be open and stay open for inspiration. Let the little, mundane things inspire you. Be vulnerable. Embrace the maoy,” dugang pa niya.

BNH: Pila imong edad nga nagsugod ka sa pag-compose og mga kanta?

Jude: First year high school ko nagsugod suwat, sa seminaryo sa Don Bosco-Lawaan.

BNH: Unsay labing unang kanta nga imong na-compose ug kabahin sa unsa kini?

Jude: Kanta pangmisa man to, usa ka Responsorial Psalm. Ako gipadungog una ni Fr. Randy Figuracion, ug iya kini gitudlo sa mga seminarista.

BNH:  Unsay labing unang kanta nga imong na-compose ug gigamit sa mga singers sa Manila?

Jude: Very first published songs nako ang katong lima ka kanta nalakip sa Relevance album ni Gary V. Apil ani ang Wait Forever, which was the carrier single ug In Another Lifetime, which was used as theme song in the movie Eternity and eventually won for me my first Awit Award.

BNH: Unsa pa’y laing gikabisihan nimo karon?

Jude: Gikan lang ko sa Malaysia staging sa akong long-running musical nga Siddhartha, which boasts of an all-Cebuano cast and crew. We’re also restaging Gugmang Giatay, the first ever Bisrock jukebox musical, which I co-wrote with Medyo Maldito, co-directed with Offbeats Production and produced by 2 Tin Cans Philippines. I’m also planning to produce a short film and, hopefully, a full-length film in Bisaya with Fatboys Production in the coming years.

BNH:  Giunsa ninyo pagsugod ni Rowel Ucat sa pag-compose sa awit nga Hahasula?

Jude: Dugay na kong nagdumot sa colloquial term nga HAHAHAHasula sukad nga nag-trending ni nga hashtag sa Facebook. I knew it was a great concept for a song. Then I saw Medyo Maldito’s meme nga niingon, “Di ta uyab, pero kung magselos ko, ayaw pagbuot.” Ako lang gipuno ang line nga “HAHAHAHasula...” Murag magic. Ako dayon siya gi-message. And it’s all history from then on.

BNH: Imong ikasulti sa Cebu music scene.

Jude: We’re continually rediscovering and redefining ourselves. And when I talk about Cebu music scene, I’m referring to the songwriting community that writes in Bisaya. Nibalik na ang inventiveness ug wit nga gipauso nila Max Surban ug Yoyoy Villame, and this time, from a very young generation of songwriters, sama nila Jerika Teodorico, Lourdes Maglinte, Kenneth Corvera ug uban pa. Maka-proud silang tanan. Unta magpadayon ang trend to the point nga mahimo siyang revolution or renaissance of anything Bisaya.

BNH:  Sa imong pagka-composer, unsa na ang major awards nga imong nadag-an?

Jude: Naapilan na nako tanan major songwriting contests sa Philippines, i.e. Cebupop, Philpop, Himig Handog and I’ve won some major and special awards from them. Kaduha na sad ko nakadawat og Awit Award, our version of the Grammys. Pero para nako, my proudest moment is being co-proponent and creative director of Vispop. Dili siya award, pero para nako mao na akong most substantial contribution, so far.

BNH: Unsa pay plano nimo alang sa VisPop?

Jude: The future of Vispop really depends on the songwriters, kung unsang mga kantang ilang panggamaon. That’s the thing with contests. Di nimo ma-predict or control ang dagan sa creativity sa mangapilay. The most we can do perhaps is organize songwriting workshops to spur ingenuity. Nagplano mi mag-workshop sa ubang lugar sa Visayas ug Mindanao karong January. Kay ang Vispop dili lang para sa Cebu. Para ni sa tanang Bisaya. Ug ultimately, para sa tanang Pinoy.

BNH:  Challenges nga imong naagian sa pag-compose nimo og kanta.

Jude: I think ang pinaka-challenging nga part sa pagka-songwriter is finding the balance between personal projects and commissioned works, the former being passion projects that generate little to no income and the latter being the projects that bring food on the table. It’s really a matter of budgeting time. Wa pa ko ka-master ana nga skill.

BNH:   Unsa ang imong reaksyon sa init nga paghangop sa Hahahahasula?

Jude: It is my proudest songwriting moment. Garbo nako nga ang ako pinaka-unang hit song kay Bisaya. Usa siya ka important milestone sa akong career.

BNH: Unsa pa nga tema sa kanta ang gusto pa nimo buhaton puhon?

Jude: Kasagaran nakong mga kanta, maoy, Hahaha.  So I guess, I need to write more happy songs.

BNH: Gawas sa Hahahahasula,  naa pa ba ka’y laing composition nga makapaliki sa listeners? Nakahisgot ka aduna ka karoy series of videos nga inyo karong gitrabaho ni Kurt Fick, palihug istoryahi mi kabahin niini?

Jude: Yes, naghimo mi’g series ron. It’s called HAHAHAHasula #MusicVideoSerye. So far, tulo na ka videos among na-release nga nagsaysay sa kaagi ni Kokoy ug Jacq (fictionalized, of course) and how they move on from being unrequited. Sa last installment nga Ang Pinaka-Maoy’ng Krismas Song, nagkita na sila finally. Magkadayon ba ang duha ka maoy? Atangi! Puro ni liki nga mga kanta.

BNH:  Kanus-a ka makaingon nga hugyaw ang usa ka  kanta?

Jude: Para nako, magka-hugot, magka-hugyaw. Matud pa ni Gibran, “Your joy is your sorrow unmasked. And the selfsame well from which your laughter rises was oftentimes filled with your tears.” Hugot ra? Di ba hugyaw? Hahaha!

BNH: Nganong ingon ana ka ka mahigugmaon sa Bisaya nga Musika?

Jude: Because it’s all that I am. Bisaya man ko. Dili na nako ikalimod. And honesty is an important element in songwriting. So I’m being most honest when I write in Bisaya. Ana ra ka simple. It is still self-expression.

BNH: Hain ug nag-unsa ka na kaha 10 ka tuig gikan karon?

Jude: Most possibly, still writing songs. Mostly Bisaya songs, perhaps. And if time and circumstances permit, already earning from it.

Tres anyos pa lamang siya dihang nasabtan na niya nga aduna siyay potensyal sa pag-awit. Ug ang maong potensyal gipalambo niya pinaagi sa paggiya sa iyang amahan nga iyang gihulagway nga “perfectionist.”).

Nagdako siya nga nagtamod sa mga musika nila ni Barbara Streisand, Pilita Corales, Dulce ug Whitney Houston gumikan usab sa iyang mga ginikanan. Ang awit nga “Evergreen” ni Barbara ang una niyang nakat-onan. Sa linghod pa lamang nga pangidaron matinabangon na siya sa pamilya, pinaagi sa iyang mga premyo sa nagkadaiyang singing contests nga iyang giapilan.

Ang iyang English teacher kaniadto nga si Mrs. Shirley Belleza maoy nagdasig niya aron mu-audition sa grupo ni Maestro Ryan Cayabyab nga dinhi sa Sugbo niadtong higayona. Nagduhaduha unta sila sa iyang pamilya sanglit kuwang ang ilang kwarta ug mubyahe pa sila paingon sa dakbayan, gikan sa Toledo. Apan gipaningkamutan lang gyud nila. Nalakip siya sa “Smokey Mountain” kaniadto.

Dihang nitekang na siya sa University of San Jose Recoletos aron mutungha, nisikat siya og maayo isip campus celebrity. Nasayran gibalibaran siya sa sinugdanan gumikan kay nahuman na ang audition sa “Sound of Music” nga produksyon sa Dramatics and Cultural Ensemble ni Dr. Mila Espina kaniadto. Apan namugos gyud ang iyang suod nga higala nga si Adrian Dionzon ngadto kang Espina nga hatagan og higayon si Anna. Nahimo siyang scholar sa Amparito Llamas Lhuiller Scholarship Foundation.

Unya, nibiya siya sa USJR ug nga nasaksihan sa tibuok nasud ang iyang talent pinaagi sa ASAP, ang Sunday variety show sa ABS-CBN. Medyo na emotional matud pa siya sanglit dihang gibasa niya ang iyang yearbook sa pagtapos niya sa high school, daw gitagna na sa nagdumala niini nga si Mr. Cavan ang mao niyang kapalaran. “Iyang (Mr. Cavan), gisuwat sa yearbook bah saying nga “we won’t be surprised to see this young girl perform in Sa Linggo Na Po Sila”, kay mao man tong Sunday noontime show atong panahuna.

BNH: Kalit ka nga nawagtang sa ASAP, diin ka sunod nga gidala sa imong kapalaran sa imong pagbiya sa maong programa ug unsay mga nahitabo sa imong career?

Anna: Hong Kong Disneyland. After six years sa Manila, naay time nga I felt lost. I was searching for something that I couldn’t find sa Manila. I didn’t know what exactly was I’m looking for. All I knew at that time, I wanted to leave. Nya si Bobby Garcia, director sa Atlantis Production gave me the opportunity to be casted as Nala sa Festival of the Lion King nila didto sa Disney. I immediately grabbed it! That was 2006. In 2007 I found another exciting opportunity at the Royal Caribbean International and became a featured singer. I worked with a young talented cast from around the world, including Reuben Laurenti of The Company. After almost eight years as a featured singer, I wanted to do something different. I became a guest entertainer on board did during different ships doing my own solo act.

BNH: Sa daghang pasidungog nga imong nadawat isip mag-aawit, unsay imong labing ipasigarbo ug ngano man?

Anna: Actually tanan man oi. Proud ko sa tanan nakong nabuhat ug nadawat as a performer. Wa koy mapili. All good and bad experiences made me who I am. Pero kada kanta nako, ang akong goal ra jud kay to be able to tell the story and make the audience understand and listen. People appreciate all the high notes you can reach. They applaud you for that. That’s a fact. When the audience goes home they think of you as a singer nga taas og tingog. That’s good! But as I grow older, I realize I want to be the singer who can inspire audiences so much that when they go home, they feel good about themselves, and be reminded how beautiful they are and how beautiful life is. I like telling a story through music. And I like touching people’s emotions. That’s my advocacy. I want everyone to be reminded how beautiful life is and how beautiful each and everyone is.

BNH:  Unsay imong gikalingawan karong panahona?

Anna: Busy sa skwelahan!! BAM! BAM! BAM! Cebu!!! Brown Academy of Music!

BNH: Nganong nakahukom ka mga magtukod/magmugna og music school? Unsay imong mga pangandoy alang niini?

Anna: Gigrasyahan ko sa Ginoo og tingog. Iya kong gipa experience og mga success, apil mga kalisud para maabot nako ang akong naabtan karon. Iya kong gipa experience to explore so many cultures in different countries! I’ve met so many great people particularly musicians and performers all over the world. I want to build a venue where I can share what I’ve learned and experienced with the youth! My husband and I share the same dream. He is a music educator. He has the same advocacy. We both traveled together and experienced music all over the world. It is time to share. Ako nga taga Lutopan sa una started as a dreamer. I want to build a school to support the young generation in Cebu. I want to help them realize their dreams and develop their passion in music, singing and performing.

BNH: Unsay mapaabot sa mga mutungha sa inyong music school? Mapareha sila nimo kanindot og tingog?

Anna: The school’s goal is to teach the core of music, the fundamentals of music. Then help each and every student find themselves as a musician. They have to find their uniqueness, find their own voice. Learn to embrace it. It is a school that will give these students a venue to express themselves and know their originality.

BNH: Sa mga nagbasa niini karon nga nangandoy nga mahisama nimo ka malampuson isip singer, unsay imong mensahe o tambag para nila?

Anna: Dream big! Pray for it. Then work hard! Be patient, do not surrender. You have to work hard and persevere! And constantly ask and pray for guidance and discernment. Mao ra man na akong gibuhat. Oh, and always acknowledge the people who helped and inspired you along the way. Be respectful to the ones ahead of you!

BNH: Kanus-a ka makaingon nga maayo nga singer ang usa ka tawo?

Anna: Ug nasabtan nako ang story that he/she is trying to convey. I realized that being able to inspire and tell a story is way better than leaving the audience in awe of the high notes but confused about what I am singing about. As a performer we have to have a purpose. If our purpose is to show our range, then that’s great. But lyrics are written to be understood as well. Songs are expressions. Og imo nang masturya nako through your music and voice, then I consider that awesome.

BNH: Unsay labi nimong ipasigarbo isip Sugbuanon?

Anna: Nga kita passionate maski unsay atong piliun buhaton, Cebuanos are passionate people. And that’s what I am proud about!
