Man loses P203T to ATM switching
CEBU, Philippines - A man from Carles town in Iloilo claimed to have lost P203,000 from his savings account due to ATM card switching.
Alfie Bernaldez reported to Iloilo City Police Station 1 that his uncle, Johnny Dianson, used the ATM booth of a bank located at the second floor of a mall in Iloilo City Proper last October 1.
Dianson was about to make a withdrawal and, as usual, there was this ATM malfunction. Shortly after, a woman approached and offered him help.
On October 5, Dianson instructed his niece, Ruth Dumangas, to withdraw from the same ATM card in Carles town. Dumangas, however, noticed that the ATM card handed to her by his uncle was in the name of a certain Manuel Mendez.
When they checked with the bank, it was learned that Dianson’s account had an unauthorized withdrawal transactions all made in Davao that amounted to P203,000.
Meanwhile, Chief Inspector Alexander Rosales, Iloilo City Police Station 1 chief, said they would investigate if Dianson was a victim of “ATM card-switching” scheme. — Jennifer P. Rendon (FREEMAN)
