As world food programme envoy: Actress KC Concepcion visits town in Leyte

Lalaine Jimenea - The Freeman

DULAG, LEYTE, Philippines — Actress KC Concepcion was in this town of Leyte province the other day to visit women and children who have been recipients of the United Nations' World Food Programme (WFP).

Concepcion, as WFP's national ambassador against hunger in the Philippine since 2008, has donated over P3 million for mobilization and provision of food aid to Yolanda-devastated areas in Leyte.

One of the hardest hit towns in Leyte is Dulag, which faces the Pacific Ocean. However, despite the tragedy, residents here continued to believe a miracle saved them. There were accounts that a lady in a blue cassock was seen riding a giant wave as it barreled through the ocean towards the town and, with a movement of her hand, redirected the waves and saved the residents.

KC visited Barangay Buntay of this town where she was welcomed by village Chairman Felipe Diorico and the residents. She joined WFP staffs and partners to distribute ready-to-eat supplementary food and micronutrient powder to the locals, and then handfed some children.

KC Concepcion and party, including Praveen Agrawal, WFP Philippines representative and country director, later proceeded to the Municipal Hall of Dulag where they were welcomed by Mayor Manuel Sia Que.

The WFP has been assisting the food needs of 8,000 families with 5,000 children in Dulag alone and, since the relief phase has ended, it has transitioned to supporting livelihood-based activities for the early recovery of the typhoon victims.

WFP is the world's largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide and each year, on the average, feeds more than 90 million people in 70 countries. (FREEMAN)
