Lucy lights up giant Christmas tree

Lalaine Jimenea - The Freeman

ORMOC CITY, Philippines – Representative Lucy Torres-Gomez (4th district, Leyte) led the lighting ceremony of a giant Christmas Tree at the Cristo Rey Shrine here last Sunday.

Lucy, who turned 38 yesterday (Dec. 11), said it was her combined birthday and Christmas gift for Ormocanons and the people of the district.

It was the third year that congresswoman sponsored the construction of the giant Christmas Tree in her home city, in cooperation with the St. Peter and Paul Parish and the Ormoc Festival and Cultural Foundation (OFCF).

On her first year as legislator in 2009, the OFCF convinced her to support its “Light up a Star Project,” which was conceptualized to raise funds for its cultural programs.

Lucy, together with her husband Richard, also made this year’s lighting up ceremony more entertaining when she brought comic duo Jose and Wally of the popular TV noontime show.

OFCF president Gloria Velasquez said she was overwhelmed by the generosity of Lucy’s friends and that this year’s donation would go into the seed fund for the printing of “The Sweet Tales of Ormoc,” a coffee table book.

The foundation also donated part of the proceeds of the fund raising to the St. Peter and Paul Parish, headed by parish priest Fr. Gilbert Urbina. (FREEMAN)
