E Samar celebrates 46th founding year

- Edgar Allan Vilbar -

BORONGAN CITY, E. Samar ,Philippines  — Eastern Samar Governor Conrado 'Aklan' Nicart, Jr led the celebration of the province's 46th founding anniversary, starting with a motorcade around this capital city.

Sentay Quitorio, provincial tourism and information officer, said it is a week-long celebration with November 9 as its foundation day when in 1965 the Estehanons said yes to a plebiscite asking if they wanted to belong to another province called Eastern Samar.

Eastern Samar was however created by Republic Act no. 4221 on June 19, 1965 dividing the whole island of Samar into three independent provinces namely; Northern Samar, Western Samar (subsequently renamed Samar) and Eastern Samar.

In the 1967 general elections, the new independent province of Eastern Samar elected its first set of officials and its Provincial Board held its inaugural session on January 2, 1968 at the Borongan Town Hall.

But it was not until September 7 of the same year when the new province was inaugurated in a simple but impressive ceremony at the town plaza.
