War veterans continue to inspire us

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The gesture of no less than US President Obama to pay honor and tribute to Filipino and American soldiers at the American Cemetery is so much appreciated and admired, especially for family and relatives of those who fought in the last war. It was an awesome moment these probably sent goose pimples to those present and even those who saw it briefly on television.

President Obama’s recognition of the sacrifices of Filipino soldiers and his acknowledgement of a Filipino nurse who helped cope with the pain of  wounded Filipinos and American soldiers was not only a sight to behold – it gave pride to the courage and determination of our soldiers, to include doctors, nurses and volunteers during that bloody Second World War.

We could never really gauge the sacrifices offered by our soldiers in ancient times, in World War II, and the present. Always, we turn to them for help in difficult and challenging times. Mr. Obama was right in saying his recent visit showed US-Phl relations have never been stronger. His pledge to help defend our nation will boost our defense ties. Our partnerships in training, especially in disaster response, and the signing of the EDCA gives us reason to look at the future with more hope.

We appreciate President Obama’s lauding our military veterans, and as he hailed our soldiers who were the first responders to “Yolanda.” — Grace B. Nato-Sulliran, Calamba City
