DPWH fast-tracks EDSA rehab project
MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has commenced phase 2 of the EDSA rehabilitation project, with expansion of pedestrian walkways to convert the capital’s major thoroughfare into a commuter-friendly highway.
After a two-week leave of absence, DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon inspected yesterday the P2.2-billion project, which spans Orense street in Makati to Monumento in Caloocan.
“We want to make sure that work progresses rapidly. We are doing everything to minimize disruptions for our commuters because the President’s instruction is to speed up works with minimal inconvenience,” Dizon said.
The DPWH targets to finish phase 2 of the EDSA rehabilitation project by 2027.
Dizon said sidewalks along EDSA would be expanded to 3.2 meters to accommodate both pedestrians and cyclists.
“Sidewalks here are only about 1.2 to 1.5 meters wide,” he said. “With a 3.2-meter layout, even bicycle riders can utilize the sidewalk without risking their lives competing with fast-moving traffic on the main highway.”
Dizon said he has initiated talks with the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority and local government units to clear out inactive structures cluttering the roadsides.
