DOST urges regions to craft AI roadmaps

CEBU, Philippines — The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has directed regions, including Central Visayas, to begin drafting their own Artificial Intelligence (AI) roadmaps, a move aimed at embedding digital transformation into local governance and industry.

Announced during the 2026 Regional Science, Technology and Innovation Week at a hotel in Cebu City, the initiative empowers local government units and industries to design strategies tailored to their unique needs, with national resources providing critical support.

DOST-7 Director Tristan Abando said regional and provincial offices will work closely with LGUs and businesses to ensure that AI adoption is not confined to Metro Manila.

While computing infrastructure in many provinces remains limited, the National AI Center for Research and Innovation will provide advanced computing capacity to backstop local projects.

The effort builds on the National AI Strategy Roadmap 2.0, updated last year to integrate generative AI, ethics, governance, and workforce development, positioning the Philippines as a hub for AI research and innovation.

To make these roadmaps actionable, DOST is deploying its Smart Factory program, which sends consultancy teams to micro, small, and medium enterprises to identify how AI, robotics, and automation can improve productivity.

It is also rolling out the Geospatial Analytics Technology Solutions (GeoSTATS) platform, combining Geographic Information Systems with AI to generate insights on raw material sourcing, logistics, and market placement.

These tools are designed to give regions a strong analytical foundation for integrating AI into development plans.

Abando added that innovators will be connected to funding opportunities, corporate partners, and collaborators through activities during the science and technology week, accelerating the commercialization of AI-driven projects.

National officials have acknowledged that AI adoption remains uneven, with only about 15 percent of establishments using advanced technologies, mostly concentrated in urban centers.

The regional roadmap initiative is intended to correct this imbalance by tailoring strategies to the realities of each province.

The 2026 Regional Science, Technology and Innovation Week, held from July 13 to 15, showcased programs, technologies, and partnerships that highlight science and innovation as drivers of inclusive development. (CEBU NEWS)
