ZAMBOANGA CITY , Philippines —  Two people including a businessman were shot dead by unidentified assailants inside a mosque in Labangan, Zamboanga del Sur on Tuesday night.

The killing occurred on the eve of the observance of the Islamic holiday, Eid’l Adha, or  the Feast of Sacrifice.

The fatalities – identified only as businessman Amarodin, 41, and a certain Abdulbayan, 65 – were praying in the mosque in Barangay Upper Sang-an when a Toyota Vios pulled over.

Witnesses said two men stepped out of the Vios, entered the mosque and shot the victims without provocation.

The victims were rushed to a nearby hospital where they were declared dead on arrival.

The assailants fled in the same vehicle.

Responding police officers recovered several bullet shells at the crime scene.

Probers have yet to identify the suspects and determine the motive for the killing.
