Secret police meeting in sabungeros’ case probed

MANILA, Philippines — Two policemen are facing charges for allegedly facilitating a secret meeting between police implicated in the missing cockfight enthusiasts’ case and the victims’ relatives.
Highway Patrol Group spokesman Lt. Nadame Malang and Maj. Reynaldo Panebe Jr. of the Philippine National Police Custodial Center are accused of interfering in the missing sabungeros case by arranging an amicable settlement between the parties.
Some of the victims’ relatives filed complaints with the National Police Commission (Napolcom) in Quezon City yesterday.
One of them recalled Panebe giving them 30 minutes with the 13 detained police officers.
Caroline Cruz, lawyer for suspected mastermind Charlie Ang, reportedly offered P40,000 in monthly financial aid in exchange for a victim’s absence in court hearings.
Cruz allegedly gave a victim P30,000 in cash during an April 16 meeting.
Before the meeting ended, Cruz allegedly handed the victim an envelope containing P20,000 for transportation costs.
Napolcom vice chairman and executive officer Rafael Vicente Calinisan said Malang and Panebe are facing administrative offenses.
