3-year-old child abused by mother’s partner rescued in Taguig City

MANILA, Philippines — A three-year-old child who was physically abused by his mother’s current partner was rescued by authorities on Monday, May 18, in Barangay Western Bicutan, Taguig City.

Taguig police also arrested the alleged child abuser, identified as alias “Carla”, 28, on the same day the incident occurred. 

“Carla” was seen repeatedly kicking and striking the child in a video that went viral, which eventually reached the authorities and led to the child’s rescue and the suspect’s arrest. 

According to reports, the incident occurred at around 12:30 a.m. on Monday after the suspect got into an argument with the child’s mother. Initial investigations also suggest that the suspect was allegedly under the influence of alcohol at that time.

Residents who witnessed the assault reportedly tried to intervene as “Carla” directed her anger at the child, who suffered injuries from the abuse.

Mother, partner face charges

The suspect was arrested at around 3 p.m through a follow-up operation. According to the police, she will be charged for allegedly violating Republic Act 7610, or the “Special Protection of Children Against Abuse, Exploitation and Discrimination Act."

The child’s mother will also face charges for violation of Section 10(a) of R.A. 7610 for neglecting the toddler’s welfare, the police said.

Meanwhile, the child was immediately brought to Taguig Pateros District Hospital for treatment. 

The child remains in the custody of his uncle, with assistance from the City Social Welfare and Development Office.
