10 hospitalized after ammonia leak in Caloocan
MANILA, Philippines — Ten people were rushed to the hospital yesterday due to an ammonia leak at an ice plant in Barangay 168, Caloocan City.
The leak also prompted the evacuation of at least 90 residents.
Seven men and three women, including a senior citizen, were admitted to two hospitals due to breathing difficulty. They are still being monitored.
Parts of Deparo Road and Teofilo Samson Avenue were closed for about two hours before reopening at 10 a.m.
The level of ammonia gas reached 0.28, which the Caloocan government classified as “moderate.”
The Bureau of Fire Protection closed the valve that caused the leak. The BFP also shut down the plant’s electricity and installed ventilation equipment.
