PNP probes ombudsman investigators’ data breach

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) has launched a probe to identify and hold accountable the people responsible for leaking personal information of field investigators of the Office of the Ombudsman.
PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. yesterday ordered the Anti-Cybercrime Group to investigate the breach, which was reported by the ombudsman over the weekend.
Since among the PNP’s main functions are investigation and intelligence gathering, Nartatez underscored the seriousness of the breach as it involves the safety of ombudsman investigators.
“We will look into this case with urgency and with a commitment to run after all those involved,” Nartatez said in a statement.
Those who are found responsible may face criminal cases under Republic Act 10173, the Data Privacy Act, and RA 10175, the Anti-Cybercrime Law.
Apart from filing complaints, Nartatez vowed to protect ombudsman investigators and other public servants who may be affected by similar threats.
“The PNP assures all government officials and employees that the police force is ready to protect them against all kinds of security threats,” Nartatez said.
