LTFRB summons 3 PUV drivers over fare discount

MANILA, Philippines — The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board has issued show-cause orders to three public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers under the service contracting program for not granting the mandated 20 percent discount to passengers.
Under the government’s net service contracting program, PUVs can still collect fares, but must provide a 20-percent discount to regular passengers.
Students, senior citizens and persons with disability should be given discounts on top of the mandatory 20 percent discount.
“We have stopped payment to these PUV drivers while the investigation is ongoing. If the complaints are proven true, their franchise might be suspended or revoked,” LTFRB Chairman Vigor Mendoza II told dzBB.
One of the PUV drivers was caught by a “mystery rider” deployed by the LTFRB to check for transport violations.
Mendoza said some PUV operators are taking advantage of the energy emergency to earn more income.
The government has allocated P1 billion for the service contracting program, but the funding will last for two to three weeks only.
