PNP: Safer Cities violators drop

MANILA, Philippines — Metro Manila residents are now complying with local ordinances as fewer people have been apprehended in the past days under the government’s Safer Cities initiative.
From over 11,700 on the first day and 13,100 on the second day of the program’s implementation, the daily average of arrested violators dropped to around 7,000.
Philippine National Police chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said the drop in the number of arrests shows improving cooperation from the public.
Up to 119,110 people were rounded up for violating ordinances in Metro Manila from April 6 to 19. Of the figure, 5,394 were nabbed for drinking and smoking in public places.
Over 9,000 curfew violators were accosted, 7,775 for roaming the streets shirtless and 1,867 for late-night karaoke use.
