Barzaga freed on bail over cyberlibel cases

MANILA, Philippines — Cavite 4th District Rep. Francisco “Kiko” Barzaga was released from police custody on Monday night after posting bail for eight counts of cyberlibel filed against him before a Makati court.
Barzaga was released from the Dasmariñas Component City police station in Barangay Zone 4 at around 10:10 p.m.
Police said Barzaga turned himself in at 6:59 p.m. after the Makati City Regional Trial Court Branch 147 issued a warrant for his arrest on charges of cyberlibel under Republic Act 10175.
Barzaga posted bail of P48,000 for each count of cyberlibel or a total of P384,000.
The congressman was accompanied by his lawyer when he surrendered to the Cavite police.
“He was informed of his constitutional rights and placed under custody in accordance with established procedures,” police said.
Several lawmakers have filed cyberlibel complaints against Barzaga after he accused members of the National Unity Party of receiving bribe money in exchange for supporting the speakership bid of Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez.
Barzaga has returned to his legislative work in the House of Representatives after his second 60-day suspension imposed by the ethics panel due to misconduct on social media lapsed on April 6.
