MANILA, Philippines —  The Department of the Interior and Local Government opened the first 911 regional command center in Cebu City on Saturday, bringing faster emergency response and real-time coordination to the people of Central Visayas, the DILG said yesterday.

Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla said the unified 911 system would enable people from Cebu, Bohol and other nearby provinces to talk to a Visayan-speaking emergency operator – a service that respects the language, culture and traditions of the people.

“For the Philippines, being an archipelago of more than 100 dialects, we must respect each other and be together. Despite our differences in politics, we must realize that we are Filipinos and the service must come as one,” Remulla said.

He added that the launching fulfills a promise he made to President Marcos to deliver a unified 911 system that uses next-generation technology and ensures that no Filipino is left behind in an emergency.

According to the DILG, the 911 regional command center will revolutionize emergency response by integrating fire, medical and rescue services and will align Cebu with global standards for rapid, coordinated and effective crisis intervention.

The unified 911 system uses next-generation advanced or NGA technology with call handling and system capabilities that can pinpoint the exact location of a caller and the probable first responders.

Remulla also unveiled the upcoming “Skynet” initiative, which will use long-range drones for real-time aerial surveillance during emergencies.

“Once you call 911, the drones will be on top of you – to take watch, take photos and ensure everyone’s safety,” Remulla said.

He warned against prank calls as he reminded the public that making fake emergency calls is punishable as it endangers lives by delaying real-time responses.

The unified 911 system was first introduced nationwide on Sept. 11 in partnership with PLDT and Smart.
