More evidence on sabungeros’ case now with DOJ – PNP

MANILA, Philippines — To boost the criminal complaints filed against the suspects in the kidnapping and disappearance of sabungeros or cockfight enthusiasts, the Philippine National Police (PNP) has submitted additional pieces of evidence to the Department of Justice.
Acting PNP chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said yesterday more files and documents related to the case were forwarded to the DOJ for evaluation.
Nartatez said the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group submitted five flash drive affidavits of a new witness, as part of the PNP’s continuing effort to build a strong and credible case.
“While we cannot disclose details due to the sensitivity of the case, we believe the evidence will help establish accountability and aid in the identification of those responsible,” Nartatez said.
Whistle-blower Julie Patidongan tagged gaming tycoon Charlie “Atong” Ang as the alleged mastermind in the kidnapping and murder of the cockfight players.
Patidongan also implicated actress Gretchen Barretto in the case.
A report aired over GMA News said among the evidence is the sworn statement of Gleer Codilla, one of the suspects in the kidnapping of sabungeros at the Manila Arena cockpit.
Nartatez assured the families of the sabungeros that the PNP remains committed to pursuing justice for the victims.
“We recognize their long and painful wait for answers, and we continue to exert all efforts to close this case,” he said.
While timelines in complex cases depend on judicial proceedings, Nartatez said the PNP is pressing forward without letup in coordination with the justice department.
“Our mandate is to enforce the law impartially. We will not allow power or connections to interfere with the investigation or the pursuit of justice,” he said.
