LTFRB to review 3,972 PUV franchises

MANILA, Philippines — The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board will review the status of 3,972 public utility vehicle franchises of PUVs operating along Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City, the LTFRB announced Friday.
The review, ordered by Acting Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez, will determine which operators remain active.
LTFRB chairperson Teofilo Guadiz III said the directive aims to ensure that the needs of commuters are prioritized.
“We will strictly enforce the DOTr directive to make sure that franchises are being used correctly. Our primary duty is to protect commuters and hold accountable those who fail to meet their obligations,” Guadiz said.
Franchise holders who are found inactive or no longer operating will be issued show-cause orders to explain their status, he added.
Commonwealth Avenue, dubbed the “killer highway” because of its accident-prone record, is one of Metro Manila’s busiest thoroughfares, traversed daily by thousands of commuters.
The LTFRB stated that the review forms part of its broader effort to regulate routes and enhance the reliability of public transport services.
