NBI nabs Korean on Interpol red notice

MANILA, Philippines — Authorities arrested a South Korean national wanted for multiple fraud during a joint law enforcement operation in Parañaque on Aug. 8, the National Bureau of Investigation said yesterday.

The NBI-International Operations Division, in coordination with the Bureau of Immigration (BI)’s Fugitive Search Unit and representatives from the Supreme Prosecutor’s Office of the Republic of Korea, took into custody Jang Sejong, who was the subject of an Interpol red notice.

Jang was nabbed in a condominium in Barangay Tambo after the NBI team coordinated with the building’s administration and security personnel. 

The raiding team served the Interpol notice to Jang and informed him of the charges and his constitutional rights.

Jang was brought to the NBI headquarters for booking procedures before he was turned over to the BI custody pending deportation proceedings.

Couple held for estafa

Meanwhile, the NBI reported yesterday the arrest of a couple at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 for their alleged involvement in a P200-million estafa case.

Nicole Martinez Syjuco and her spouse Miguel, owners of a construction firm, were nabbed by NBI agents upon their arrival from Hong Kong.

The arrest stemmed from a warrant issued by a Davao Occidental court on July 22, 2024. 

The Syjucos were accused of misappropriation and contractual deceit involving three major construction projects in Mindanao worth P200 million.

Investigators said the complainant had paid over 95 percent of the agreed costs, but the couple allegedly failed to complete the projects. 

The Syjucos also allegedly refused to return advance payments for another project.
