Quake detection equipment stolen
BAGUIO CITY – The theft of earthquake monitoring equipment at Mt. Pinatubo will not affect the government’s quake detection activities, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.
Phivolcs chief Teresito Bacolcol said that robbers took quake monitoring equipment valued at P1.2 million from the San Jose Observation Station located at the Tarlac side of Pinatubo.
The theft was discovered on Wednesday.
Bacolcol said it was the third time that the station had been robbed.
The equipment detects seismic and volcanic activities in the northernmost part of the volcano, which straddles the provinces of Pampanga, Tarlac and Zambales.
“We don’t have control over the north anymore, but operations won’t be hampered because we still have nine other stations,” Bacolcol said at a press conference yesterday.
The San Jose Observation Station is one of 10 seismic stations that make up the Pinatubo Volcano Network.
“In the meantime, we have other instruments intended for other volcanoes to temporarily replace the stolen equipment,” Bacolcol said.
