MANILA, Philippines — Following the death of a soldier after a reception rite in Maguindano del Norte over the weekend, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) reassured the public of the military’s commitment to upholding the highest standards of conduct and discipline.

“We do not and will never tolerate hazing, physical abuse, maltreatment or any form of degrading treatment. These values are instilled in every soldier from pre-entry training and reinforced throughout their service,” a statement declared yesterday following the death of Pvt. Charlie Patigayon.

“The AFP is a professional institution built on discipline, integrity and respect for human dignity,” the statement added.

According to the military, AFP chief Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. has issued “a clear and uncompromising directive to all units to uphold the highest standards of military conduct and discipline and to reject all forms of hazing, physical abuse, maltreatment and degrading treatment.”

The AFP said it remains fully committed to cultivating a culture of professionalism, mutual respect and accountability.

“All personnel, regardless of rank or tenure must be treated with dignity in every setting whether in training, duty, ceremonies or daily interactions,” the AFP stressed.

With an ongoing investigation, the Philippine Army placed 21 soldiers of the 6th Infantry Battalion under the 601st Infantry Brigade under restrictive custody.

The unit’s commander, Maj. Gen. Donald Gumiran, ordered an inquiry into the death of Patigayon who, along with several other privates, were allegedly subjected to a physically taxing reception procedure at Camp Siongco in Awang, Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao del Norte.
