MANILA, Philippines — The Land Transportation Office has officially cleared the license plate backlog after the LTO produced over 18.5 million motorcycle and vehicle plates.

According to LTO data, the agency has produced 11,815,068 motorcycle plates and 6,763,544 motor vehicle plates.

The figures are equivalent to 3,381,772 pairs of license plates, addressing both the current production needs and the backlog that had remained unresolved since 2014 due to logistical and procurement problems.

“On the last day of June, we were able to comply with our commitment by producing 18,578,612 license plates, including both backlogs and current requirements,” LTO officer-in-charge Greg Pua said.

“This significant accomplishment, which surpassed the expectations of everybody, is a team effort, with the dedication and perseverance of our plate-making plant,” Pua added.

The LTO said it would focus on distributing the license plates to motorists who were affected by the backlog.

As part of efforts to improve delivery and transparency, the LTO introduced a digital license plate tracker system accessible through the eGovPH mobile application, which is available on Google Play and App Store.

Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon said the new feature would allow motorcycle owners to check the status of their license plates by putting either their plate number or motor vehicle file number.

Motorcycle owners may either claim their license plates at the nearest LTO district office or opt to have these delivered by a courier service, Dizon said.

Transportation Undersecretary for road transport and non-infrastructure Ramon Reyes said the distribution of the 5.4 million motorcycle plates is expected to be completed by October.

“Our target is to reach 100 percent in October,” Reyes said.

Luzon recorded the largest backlog with 2.4 million motorcycle plates followed by Metro Manila with 1.4 million, Mindanao with 992,000 and the Visayas with 672,000.

The LTO said the distribution of license plates is ongoing, with over seven million already released.
