La Union school head bans use of backpacks

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union, Philippines — Citing security risks, the city school’s division head ordered a ban on the use of backpacks among students, advising them to utilize instead transparent bags that can easily be checked by school authorities.
Schools division superintendent Shiela Marie Primicias issued a memorandum reminding all school heads about the prohibition.
“The primary objective of this policy is to promote safety and security within school premises and to prevent the concealment of prohibited items such as cigarettes, vapes, sharp objects, guns, ammunition and other potentially dangerous materials,” Primicias said in her memo.
“This measure is part of our proactive approach to maintaining a safe and conducive learning environment for everyone,” she added.
Brig. Gen. Jean Fajardo, Central Luzon police director, said 420 police officers were deployed to maintain peace and suppress criminal activities in all Central Luzon schools.
At least 225 police assistance desks – aimed at preventing or quickly responding to reports of bullying, theft and snatching, among other crimes – were also set up near schools. – Ramon Efren Lazaro
