NBI summons content creator over fake news

MANILA, Philippines — The National Bureau of Investigation has summoned a content creator who posted false information online about an alleged rivalry between the NBI and the Philippine National Police (PNP) over a P10-million reward for information leading to the arrest of Apollo Quiboloy.
NBI Director Jaime Santiago confirmed the bureau’s action, emphasizing its serious stance against the spread of disinformation.
“We at the NBI are taking fake news seriously,” Santiago said. “She posted that the NBI and PNP were fighting over the reward money for Quiboloy’s arrest. That’s not true.”
Santiago said the content creator, identified only as Jenny, claimed in her vlog that the PNP stopped an NBI vehicle and made a story out of it, explaining that the video she used was taken during a legitimate checkpoint in Davao City.
Santiago said there was no conflict between the two agencies.
“We are still studying her case. She’s not off the hook yet,” he said.
“We hope this serves as a lesson to others so we can put an end to disinformation. Some content creators spread fake news just to gain views and followers, but it only causes confusion,” Santiago added.
The content creator has publicly apologized for her actions.
