Flood forecasting system launched in Cagayan de Oro

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has launched a flood forecasting and warning system at the Cagayan de Oro river basin to enhance monitoring and disaster preparedness in the towns of Molugan and El Salvador.

The system, funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency, is equipped with 13 telemetered rainfall and water level sensors, two x-band radar stations and a dedicated data transmission network.

The DOST said the system was strategically installed from upstream to downstream and would deliver timely and accurate flood alerts to vulnerable communities.

DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. said the system aims to empower disaster response efforts and protect lives and livelihoods.

“We are not powerless against disasters when we have the right knowledge, the right tools and the right behavior,” Solidum said.

The system was developed in response to the devastation caused by Typhoon Sendong in the province in 2011.

Data from the system will be transmitted to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration or PAGASA as well as to local disaster offices for real-time monitoring.

Japanese Ambassador Endo Kazuya reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to supporting disaster resilience efforts in the Philippines and emphasized continued cooperation in disaster risk reduction.

Solidum cited the importance of redefining resilience, saying that disaster preparedness should also promote economic growth, protect businesses and ensure long-term national progress.
