P600,000 smuggled cigarettes set for destruction

MANILA, Philippines — The Bureau of Customs (BOC) will destroy up to P600,000 worth of smuggled cigarettes seized recently in Lanao del Norte.
Aside from the cigarettes, authorities also seized the vehicle used in transporting the contraband on June 4.
The BOC’s auction and cargo disposal division has yet to set the date for the destruction of the contraband.
Authorities said the cigarettes were manufactured abroad and did not have the mandatory stamp from the Bureau of Internal Revenue.
Alexandra Lumontad, BOC district collector at the port of Cagayan de Oro, issued a warrant of seizure and detention against the cigarettes and the vehicle.
The anti-smuggling operation was conducted with the help of the police and village officials in Barangay Baning in Sapad town.
