ACG: Online scams down by 40 percent

MANILA, Philippines — Online scams dropped by at least 40 percent last month, the police Anti-Cybercrime Group (ACG) reported yesterday.
The ACG documented 624 cases of online scams in January, a decrease of 40.29 percent compared to 1,045 incidents in the same month last year.
ACG director Brig. Gen. Sidney Hernia attributed the drop to their vigilance and the establishment of more cybercrime desks in the country.
Hernia also lauded victims of online fraud for reporting to the police, a move that eventually led to the arrest of some of the perpetrators.
As a result, scammers are now hesitant to commit crimes, he said.
To bolster its campaign against cyber fraud, the ACG is training police officers assigned at cybercrime desks to sharpen their skills and expertise in cybercrime investigation.
During a command conference with Philippine National Police chief Gen. Benjamin Acorda and senior police officials on Thursday, President Marcos said it is important for the PNP to adapt and effectively respond to cyber threats.
Marcos also underscored the need for standardized procurement processes and the establishment of a robust police cybercrime response unit.
